GDCM is no longer maintained, better user GDCM2:

By the way :
If vtkDICOMImageReader cannot read your images, instead of converting
this images into a vtkDICOMImageReader reable format, better use
vtkGDCMImageReader
have a look at :
http://gdcm.sourceforge.net/html/classvtkGDCMImageReader.html
